Massage with Kendra Brody

Influenced at a young age by her mother’s teaching of Buddhism while simultaneously practicing Western Medicine, Kendra sought other modalities of alternative healing. She began to study Eastern techniques and Chinese medicine. Furthering her education in the massage therapy program at the Swedish Institute in New York City, along with her personal yoga practice, Kendra has developed an keen awareness of the body and mind relationship. In order to find the appropriate treatment for the physical body, one must start by identifying the emotional roots deep within the energetic structure. Her massage style combines classic Swedish strokes and acupressure therapy as well as shiatsu techniques and eastern theory.

Services Offered

Massage modalities reduce stress hormone levels (cortisol), and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin, affording an improvement in mood amongst other benefits.

The most common and well known of massage treatments, Swedish massage is designed to manipulate the soft tissue of the body in order to bring about increased circulation and a feeling of relaxed well-being. The client remains draped throughout the treatment with only the areas being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of smooth flowing strokes, compression, vibration, and gentle rocking movements along with the application of oil or lotion to reduce friction on the skin. The benefits of Swedish Massage include loosening of tight muscle restrictions, increased range of motion, reduced swelling from injury, relief from sore aching muscles, release of scar tissue adhesions, improved circulation and an overall feeling of relaxation.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage but with deeper pressure that is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people’s blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage.

was developed in Japan in the early 1900’s as an integration of Western science, ancient Japanese massage techniques, and Chinese medical theory. It is used to promote the flow of “qi” or energy throughout the body.  Pressure is applied to acupressure points along the body’s meridians or energy pathways. Shiatsu benefits the body and mind by decreasing stress, increasing joint mobility, energy and circulation and boosting the immune system.  This is a wonderful therapy designed to release tension, promote mind/body balance and bring a renewed sense of well being.

Now offering Group Acupuncture!

Thursdays from 5 to 7 pm, $25/Per 30 minute session. Group acupuncture is an interesting and affordable option for those who may require or prefer multiple treatments and also for those who find the energy of a group setting helpful to their healing process. In group treatment, you will have a brief and private consultation with a licensed acupuncturist. You will then be seated for treatment in a comfortable chair in a quiet room; and usually there will be a few other persons present in the same room. You will be fully clothed, but it is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing, as the acupuncturist will likely ask you to roll up your pants to the knee and your tops to the elbow (so she can access points on your lower arms and legs). Sterile single use needles will be inserted in the appropriate points to address your condition and you will relax quietly for approximately 20 to 30 minutes before the needles are removed. You will then quietly leave the treatment room, hopefully well rested, refreshed and on your path to healing!

Please book here. All appointment fees are non-refundable, cancellation policy is strictly 24 hours in advance for account credit only.

Prior to attending acupuncture school, Marilyn worked in a high tech business environment, so she has first hand experience and a particular interest in addressing the emotional and physical stresses that one experiences living and working in this busy city and our high tech world. Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine with Moonching Wu

The most significant difference between classical Chinese Medicine and contemporary Western Medicine is that under the Chinese modality, diagnosis and treatment are tailored to each patient. The unique ability of each Chinese Medicine practitioner to decipher these complex signs and symptoms is the first important step towards healing. Because every system is interrelated and interdependent there is no specialization in Chinese Medicine. For example, separating one vital organ from the respiratory system is discordant with the philosophy of Chinese Medicine. Another common occurrence which often results in a deeper imbalance is overlooking the correlation between the psychological and physical bodies.

Dedicated to the wisdom of Chinese antiquity, Moonching applies science and philosophy from both the Eastern and Western traditions in her practice of Chinese medicine with a classical interpretation and focus. Moonching is licensed by New York State and certified nationally (NCCAOM). She has been healing patients since 2013 at her private practice (Midtown Manhattan). Private and group treatments are both available at Usha Veda Yoga.

Born and raised in Taiwan, Moonching Wu immigrated to the United States when she was 10 years old. She graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with honors from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Her artwork has been collected and exhibited in various venues throughout the US, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Since 1997 she has worked as a designer and production artist for numerous individual and corporate clients.

Here is a list of ailments for which patients commonly seek treatments.

Will acupuncture hurt?

Naturally there is some sensation when the needle is inserted at the skin level, however, it is merely pinchy for a second. If you are concerned about this aspect, simply let your practitioner know. Acpuncture needles are less than 10% the diameter of hypodermic needles used for drawing blood. The needles used in facial rejuvenation are so thin that patients often do not feel insertions at all. In other words, the size of needles and insertion technique can be adjusted according to each patient’s needs.

How many treatments will it take?

Generally, it takes about 4 weekly appointments before this question can be answered with any accuracy. Keep in mind this is an average number. For example, one patient only had to come for 2 treatments before his pain was totally gone, though chronic issues will take many more sessions than that.

How long will treatments take?

Initial appointment takes about 1.5-2 hours; weekly 1 hour follow up treatment is the most common protocol.

How does acupuncture work?

Each patient’s Qi (further explained below) are activated with acupuncture. In other words, your body begins healing with the aid of the practitioner.

What does Chinese Medicine treat?

The short answer is: anything and everything that is off balance.

Reiki is a healing system for balancing energy that effects the physical and emotional body, the mind, and the spirit. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese meaning Universal Life Energy referring to the energy that is in and surrounds everything.  Reiki is a system of natural healing practiced by Tibetan monks for centuries eventually being rediscovered in Japan in the 1920’s by Mikau Usui, a monk, educator, doctor, and healer.

Reiki practitioners transmit healing life force energy in a very focused way through their hands, which can be felt as heat. The life force or energy within us that keeps us alive nourishes the cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

Life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings; negative thoughts and feelings damage the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body. During a Reiki treatment, positive energy flows through the energy field and charging it with positive energy. It cleanses the body of built up toxins or pain. It soothes shock, calms the mind and emotions, and accelerates the body’s natural ability to heal itself while promoting a state of total relaxation and well-being.

Reiki can relieve pain and acute systems quite rapidly while chronic problems may require more extensive treatment. Reiki has proven helpful with physical and emotional distress providing a sense of inner harmony and increasing energy and vitality.
